Natychmiast na miejsce pożary zostały wysłane liczne siły i środki straży pożarnej z trzech powiatów (wągrowiecki, gnieźnieński oraz poznański). Po dojeździe na miejsce zdarzenia okazało się, że pożarem objęty jest już cały budynek gospodarczy o powierzchni około 2000m2, w którym znajduje się słoma i siano w balotach łącznie około 500 sztuk.
W pierwszej kolejności działania straży pożarnej polegały na zabezpieczeniu miejsca zdarzenia. Do momentu potwierdzenia odłączenia prądu działania skupiły się na obronie budynku mieszkalnego (schładzanie powierzchni dachu) oraz obronie budynku nieczynnej gorzelni (schładzanie powierzchni dachu pokrytego papą) jednocześnie budując pierwszy punkt czerpania wody na rzece Wełna.
Po potwierdzeniu odłączenia prądu podano prądy wody z drabiny mechanicznej oraz dwóch prądów wody do wnętrza palącego się budynku.
Intensywność pożaru spowodowała zawalenie się konstrukcji dachu wraz z pokryciem eternitowym do wnętrza budynku przykrywając tym samym licznie tlące się bale słomy i siana uniemożliwiając tym samym skuteczne gaszenie oraz ich usunięcie przy pomocy ciężkiego sprzętu.
